The palliative care program at Nkhoma started in 2016, and 951 patients (mostly adults) have been cared for by the team. In 2021, the palliative care program was supported by The Hospice of the North Coast and Haraldsplass Hospital. The program aims to provide quality of life to people with terminal and chronic conditions. There was a daily clinic in the hospital and 2 days of outreach home-based care for bedridden patients. Program started in 2016, 951 (mostly adults) patients have been cared for by the team. In 2021 that included 185 new patients. Four children with sickle cell disease were in the program in 2021.

Services are offered free. The team uses a holistic approach (Physical, spiritual, Social, and psychological) when required, medication is provided at health centres under Nkhoma supervision. Trainings are conducted for clinicians, traditional healers, HSAs and volunteers and religious leaders on care of bedridden patients. During 2021, 6 Health centres were visited regularly to mentor staff on patient approach in palliative care. A new service by the team is advice on will writing for terminally ill patients to guard against property disputes
